Freedom of Belief:
Disciples are called together around one essential of faith - Belief in Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior. Believers are free to follow their consciences guided by the Bible, the Holy Spirit, study, prayer, and we are expected to extend that same freedom to others.
Ministry of All Believers: Both ministers and lay persons, men, women and children lead in worship, service, and spiritual growth.
Scripture: We are a "People of the Book" who study the Bible to deepen our connection with God and others and to discern God’s will for the living of our lives.
Open Communion: We celebrate communion weekly. It is open to all believers.
Baptism by Immersion: In baptism, the old self-centered life is set aside and a new life of trust in God begins. While we practice baptism by immersion, other baptism traditions are honored.
~ Our Mission ~
Making God's Love Real to Others By Inviting People to:
Know the love of God.
Grow as Jesus' disciples.
Show God's love to others.
~ Our Vision ~
*A major, uptown congregation
*primarily composed of people from Martinsville and the surrounding communities because they find here a unique and exciting expression of Christian faith, community, ministry and outreach
*intentionally becoming a socially, economically and racially inclusive congregation that bears witness to the wholeness of the kingdom of God for all ages,
*clearly offering an expression of the Christian faith that is at the center of the Disciples of Christ tradition, which is:
*Christ–centered: focused on the life, words, way, and Spirit of Jesus proclaimed in the gospel;
*biblically rooted: encouraging spiritually alive, faithful study of the Bible, using tools of devotion and scholarship that are appropriate to a diverse body of people;
*warm-hearted: a joyful, loving and welcoming congregation that experiences and shares the grace of God in Jesus Christ in personal and positive ways;
*open-minded: a place where people search, think, question, and honestly express their growing experience of faith in an accepting and affirming atmosphere;
*mission-directed: continuing the strong sense of mission that has been a part of our identity, both in terms of mission to the city and mission in the world;
*and through covenant: we are committed to our sister churches, and the regional and general ministries throughout the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), to support, network and encourage vital ministries that share the Good News of Jesus.

We value a living faith shaped by the Bible's witness to God's purposes for this world as given full expression through God's love in Jesus Christ.
John 3:16-17; Ephesians 1:8-10
Hospitality
We value the practice of hospitality, whereby all are welcomed as children of God, strangers become friends, and shared meals and a communion table open to all impart food for both body and soul.

1 Corinthians 10: 16-17; Hebrews 13:1-2
Artful Worship in Spirit and Truth
We value worshipping God in a way that engages the mind, touches the heart, and inspires the Spirit through biblical preaching, diverse music, prayer, and the weekly celebration of the Lord's Supper.
