Mission Opportunities

It may seem a bit out of the ordinary to have our Men’s and Women’s Fellowship listed under the heading of Mission Opportunities, but “Mission” is their focus. Serving others through the gifts and talents God has equipped them with, these fellowships grow in strength and faith as they focus on caring for God’s children.

Mens Fellowship

Click to Enlarge Our men’s fellowship gathers on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month at 8:30am. The 2nd Saturday is focused on fellowship and a study that lends direction and guidance in how to grow spiritually as a servant. Presently, the group is going through the book: "Purpose Driven Church". Discussion is free and flowing. The group encourages opinions and personal interpretation of whatever study that is undertaken. Though the fellowship hasn’t offered breakfast beyond donuts, coffee and an occasional sausage biscuit there is some talk about offering more of a breakfast in 2006.

On the 4th Saturday of each month, the men undertake a mission project. Since the summer, the men have been helping out at a Habitat for Humanity Project in the community. Projects can range from something like Habitat to painting a room at the church to sorting food and clothing at an area community ministry.

Womens Fellowship

Click to Enlarge Our Women’s Fellowship is a Mission and Study group that has always been a very active fellowship in the life of the church. They have had the reputation of undertaking fun fund raisers for worthy causes in the church and community. They are well known throughout the community for their Annual Bazaar and Fashion Show that provides an outstanding sit-down luncheon with all the trappings of a high scale restaurant. Area clothiers show off some of the season’s latest fashions at the event. In previous years, bake sales and flea markets have also been a part of the Bazaar. The women though, are so much more than just raising funds, their purpose is to grow spiritually and serve others.

In order to achieve their purpose, there are three Circles (small group fellowships) that nurture the relationships among the women through study and worship to enable them to be servants of Christ in the community and the world.

One Circle meets in homes on the 1st Monday of each month at 10:30am. Patsy Slaydon is the contact person. To find out where the meeting is to be held, please call the church office for Patsy’s number.

Another Circle meets on the 2nd Monday of each month at the church at 10:30am.

The third Circle meets in the evening on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:00pm at the church.

There is a General Meeting of all the women on a quarterly basis during the course of the year. The Women’s Fellowship has an Executive Team of Officers that also meets quarterly. The Executive Team meets the month before the General meeting.

Also, there is a Women’s Luncheon on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at noon at an area restaurant. Please see our church calendar for the location. All are welcome! Bring a friend!

To get a schedule of dates or if you have any questions about the Women’s Fellowship, please call the CWF President, Jean Beam. You may get her number from the church office.

Hands On Ministry!

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Every Saturday at 7:30pm AA meets in the Fellowship Hall of Broad Street. This well attended fellowship has touched many lives.

Bible Studies at the Martinsville and Henry Hotels: Our church offers monthly studies at both hotels that offer subsidized housing and low-cost accommodations for low income individuals and families. Sign-up to help with a study! Call the church office today!

Cabin Adoption: Our church has committed to participate in the upkeep of a cabin at Craig Springs. Craig Springs is the Virginia Region’s Youth Summer Camp. A number of our youth benefit from the several camps that are offered at Craig Spring during the course of the summer. We have joined with the churches in District IV (Southwestern Virginia) to assist in the providing for the physical upkeep of the cabin. To get a schedule of the work dates for the Cabin, please call the church office.

CoDA: CoDA stands for Co-Dependents Anonymous. Every Thursday a CoDA meeting is held at Broad Street at 7pm. Did you grow up in a dysfunctional family? Would you like to learn how to have healthy relationships? You are welcome to attend. Frankie Smith, a church member here at Broad Street has started this ministry in our area. It is the only one of its kind in Martinsville. Questions? Please call the church office.

Community Meal at Calvary Christian Church. Every 3rd Tuesday from 5:30-6:30pm youth volunteers from our church have assisted with a meal for those in need in our community at one of our sister congregations.

Contact: Contact has provided a free crisis line for anyone in need to call. The line is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Many of Contacts volunteers through the years have been from Broad Street. Contact has been training new volunteers at our church for the past 4 years. Call 638-8980 to volunteer.

Food and Clothing Collections: Throughout the course of the year, members and friends of Broad Street have the opportunity to support the local Salvation Army Ministry through several food and clothing drives.

Habitat for Humanity: Every 4th Saturday, members and friends of our church participate in a local Habitat project. The present house we’re working on is in Chatham Heights. You must be at least 16 years of age to participate. Call the church office for location. Volunteers are also need on Wednesday afternoons, if Saturdays don’t work for you.

Heart in Hand Ministry: Every Thursday at 9:30am at Broad Street our Heart in Hand Ministry comes to life as sewing machines and knitting needles rev up. Members and friends of our church converge on our “Sewing Room” to make hand-made items for people in need. It could be a teddy bear for a child in need or a bib for a homebound person or a lap robe or quilt or walker caddy. Whether you’re a novice or a pro, all are welcome to participate. There are plenty of willing teachers.

Matthew 25 Fund: Throughout the year, Broad Street works on a daily basis with its neighbors in need. We offer counseling and referral and financial assistance. Last year alone we assisted people with over $8,000.00 towards such things as prescriptions, utility bills, rent, food, and school supplies. This fund is over and above our regular giving to outreach. All funds directed to Matthew 25 go directly back into the community.

National and International Mission: Our Youth Fellowship has participated in a week long mission effort in Appalachia in putting on a roof for an impoverished family. There are efforts underway to undertake a mission effort in the hurricane ravaged South this coming late winter/early spring of 2006. We are putting together a team with two other Disciple congregations- Fayette Street and Calvary Christian Churches.

Ronald McDonald House: Broad Street supports the Ronald McDonald House in Roanoke, VA. The House provides free or affordable housing for parents, from out of town, who have children in the hospital. Many members and friends of the church collect tabs from cans and then deliver the tabs to the Ronald McDonald House, who then recycles the aluminum for proceeds.

Salvation Army Endeavors: Members and friends of Broad Street participate in the annual Bell Ringing during Christmas time and also support several Angel Tree families in Martinsville. The Angel Tree families are referred to us by the Salvation Army during the Christmas season. We then purchase gifts for family members.

Volunteer Emergency Families for Children (VEFC): Members of our church are VEFC parents who open their home for children (infants-teenagers) in need of emergency housing. VEFC is always looking for more volunteers to train for this much needed ministry in our community. Call the church office for more information.

Other area ministries that we support are: The Virginia Council of Churches, Gideons, American Bible Society, the Christian Church in District IV, Henry County-Martinsille Department of Social Services, Good News Jail Ministry, Open Arms, Adult Day Care Center and the American Red Cross.
