Broad Street Christian Church Our Pastor
Ministries
Here at Broad Street we truly believe that everyone has a spiritual gift to offer for the benefit of the building-up of God’s church. Sessions on Baptism
The tradition and practice of our denomination is to embrace what is often referred to as a “believer’s baptism”. While we accept other forms of baptism, such as infant baptism, our form of baptism is offered to those who are of an age where they consciously, willingly and faithfully make the personal decision to be baptized. Classes are offered in the fall and spring for those who are considering baptism. The decision to be baptized is something we take quite seriously and we offer the support, encouragement, and guidance sought for those who want to be baptized. Just over the past few years we have baptized children of God ranging from ages 7 to 75.

~ Deacon Ministries ~

Our deacons are members of the church who intentional project to the faith community a way of life reflective of a servant of Christ. Our deacons are to hold each other accountable in their endeavors to serve God’s children in this world. They are often most visible in their serving capacity during communion on Sunday mornings. Their role in communion can be seen as symbolic of their desire to enable communion among all of God’s children throughout the world.

One does not have to be a deacon to serve. Our deacons are called to inspire others into a life of servanthood. They are a visible reminder… that wherever we may be…whatever job we may have…our calling…our vocation… is to care for the least of God’s children. Who are the least? Whomever God has placed in our path of life. There is not a person you have seen for whom Christ did not die for. Our deacons understand this and are active in offering leadership and working with our various ministry teams and actively participating in our small group fellowships here at Broad Street. At least twice a year we have deacon retreats for on-going training and support.

~ Elder Ministries ~

Click to EnlargeWhile our deacons are considered to be “Servant leaders in our midst”, our Elders are seen in the role of being “Spiritual leaders”. Our elders understand the importance of being a spiritual influence to others. They are not more “spiritual” than others. There is no hierarchy here at Broad Street. We all stand on level ground before the cross. Rather, our elders are visible reminders that we are all ultimately spiritual beings. They remind us that the greatest force in this world is love. They take it upon themselves to help nurture the spirituality of the church, that is, to help nurture our relationships with God. Prayer and meditation are spiritual disciplines that they nurture within their lives and within the lives of others. As with the deacons they are quite active in nearly every capacity of the church life. Our elders meet every Monday for prayer on behalf of the church. They also serve home communion to those who are homebound, in nursing homes, and rehab centers.

Pre-Worship Chapel Appeal
Every Sunday, an open invitation is extended to all who would like to gather in our chapel at 10:45am to pray for the service of worship.

Post-Worship Chapel Appeal
Every Sunday, following our 11am worship our elders are available to pray with you in our chapel.

Festival of Prayer and Renewal
In the fall we offer a week long series of prayer services during the course of the week. Mid-week we have a meal together and a program is offered for the evening. The purpose is to seek renewal in our lives and in our ministry here at Broad Street.

Prayer Vigil
During the Lenten season we undertake a 24 hour unbroken chain of prayer. The theme changes each year, but the purpose is the same: to nurture our relationship with God and one another.

~ GIVESTRONG VOLUNTEERS ~

A "GiveStrong Volunteer" is a Broad Streeter that is willing to spread his/her wings a bit in the volunteering of time and talent. While we will continue to have standing Ministry Teams (Committees)-Worship, Evangelism, Membership, Finance/Stewardship, Education, Outreach, and Communication, there are a number of people who would rather not have to serve on a standing Ministry Team and be committed for a year or two to meetings and activities. While these Standing Teams are needed, we are beginning to transition a bit here at Broad Street enabling people to get involved in an event or activity for a particular Ministry Team and then step away. The commitment is short term and task oriented.

As a "GiveStrong Volunteer", you would be agreeing to have your name placed on a long list of volunteers in the church. This list would be made available to the Ministry Team Leaders who would then have the understanding they can call anyone on the list for a short-term task/event/activity. It is understood that you may not be interested and you have the right to say, No, I’m not interested."

Being a "GiveStrong Volunteer" affords you the opportunity to experience many different facets of life in the church and perhaps discover an area in the ministry here that really is something that you find meaningful and energizing. You could be called to help out with preparing communion for just one Sunday, help read scripture one Sunday, or close up the church one Sunday. You could be called to help prepare a mailing or to help ring bells for the Salvation Army. Potentially, the requests for your assistance could be wide and varied.

To get a handle on who is and isn’t being called on the list, the Cabinet (which is made up of all the Ministry Team Leaders) will discuss in their meeting each month, how the list is being utilized.

The best way to discover your passion for the church and the gifts you have to offer is by simply trying something once or twice. Please always remember though, the greatest gift to the church is YOU! You are God’s gift to the church! This "GiveStrong Volunteer" list that we’re wanting to establish is just one way to help you in your call to be a servant of Christ…nothing more…nothing less.

GiveStrong Broad Street! We can make God’s love real to others!
